But the researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab have developed a small plastic device which will change its Orkut or Facebook status.

Cell phones are available everywhere, so most people would just require the low cost plastic device.

The software in it can determine a person’s vision prescription on the spot by using a small plastic lens that clips to a cell phone screen.

The patient needs to attach the plastic to the screen of a cell phone and look into a small lens. Press the arrow keys of the phone until the set of parallel green and red lines overlap.

This needs to be repeated 8 times at different angles for each eye. It takes less then two minutes of your time and the loaded software provides you with the prescription data.

According to the researchers it currently costs around $2 to get manufactured now, but can get down to pennies when manufactured on large scale. They have decided to test the device in Boston this summer.

They have already applied for the open public inspection (patent) called Near-Eye Tool for Refractive Assessment (NETRA) and are planning to manufacture it on a large scale.

I’m sure this will create a new record and be a great help for the people in remote areas.
